Long story short, my 99 225OX66 blew up on me as I was trying to go rockfishing on Sunday. bottom two cylinders have 0 and 60 compression. Oil pump and or sensor failed without an alarm going off so the engine ran without oil...

So I am talking to my insurance company about help and new engine options. In the research I've done and talking with a couple shops around here, there is no point to rebuild my motor because the pre 2001 blocks don't hold up well to rebuilds and for the cost to rebuild it I could replace it with another OX66 for the same costs. So here is what I am thinking...

200-250 HPDI - Will a 200 push my 231 with a tower ok? I'm mainly a bay boat but I make 50mi runs quite a bit. I know about the reliability issues but I have a great chance to grab a 200 in good shape for good money. $5500 with rigging

Another OX66 - Have a friend with a pair of 250 OX66s that I could by one of them for $5k with rigging.

The above don't require a transom rebuild. Here is the kicker though...

I can get a smoking deal on a F225 and rigging. Its a 2007 that has already had the exhaust updates done along with new seals in the lower unit. 1500hrs on the engine. Only problem is it will require a transom rebuild and raising the splash well area flush with the deck allow for proper self bailing. BUT, goodbye to worrying about oil tanks and hello gas mileage.

The boat normally sits from mid jan till april. What would my fellow CM maniacs do...?

I wouldnt go with the F225 or the ox66...I'd try for a direct injection 2 stroke of some type, HPDI or otherwise. If memory serves, the 200 was a goodie, but the 225/250 bad news.

here is my opinion. I have a 91 221 which is very similar to your 231. I have a t-top without tower. Originally I had a 1990 200 Johnson on it. It was passable performance and it served me well, but with full crew and equipment getting on plane took some time. I repowered with an etec 250. It was like a different boat. Performance was significantly better. Especially with your tower, I don't think the 200 will be enough. As for the F225, I don't recall what year they came out but the early ones of those were dogs. I don't recall a problem with reliability but they just did not have the low end torque. They ran fine but couldn't get on plane for a city block. That could have been addressed with an EEM update or something else. Just the age would make me want to check into that. Of the options you listed I would say that the OX66 is a great motor and is hard to kill (although you managed it)

I would look into a new powerhead for the ox66, I know jasper marine sells them. The 200 HPDI has that high-pressure injection pump thats like $1200 if it fails.

Whiteowl, I have a 1990 221 with a 2006 etec 250. Would love to chat with you sometime. What can you tell me about your etec experience thus far?

Sad to hear about that ox66. They are such great motors. I would either go with another ox66 or an HPDI, however definitely the Yamaha 225,250 or 300 HPDI. They are TROUBLE. The 200 HPDI is a very reliable motor .

Another thing to consider is the transom weight of a 4 stroke. It will definitely put those scuppers down into or at the water line.

my buddy repowered his 231 with an etec 225 and is very pleased with it. Hpdi's are too old and finicky so I would not go that route. Personally I would look for a 2008+ used Suzuiki 225-250 for your hull.

Id be interested anyones opinion on the inline Suzuki 200 with a 4 blade prop being a suitable replacement for an ox66 225 on this hull.

The weight should be a little less. I hear good things about the 4 banger Suzuki with a 4 blade prop.

I have a 1990 231 that is in pretty good shape, with original 225 HP Evinrude, with 440 original hours.

I have been wondering about updating with a newer motor. Found a rebuild 2006 225 HP OPTIMAX, would cost me about $9K.

I'm always wary of rebuilds (some done right, some not)...keep looking for a low hour motor, and you may get a better deal.

rebuilding your powerhead is a roll of the dice I agree, some last, some don't. Ideally would start thinking 4 stroke and moving some weight forward

Thanks for the replies. All advice is appreciated. A couple things to add.

Whatever engine I get, it will have to be mechanical controls as I have morse controls for the lower and upper stations. Obviously, I will want the wiring harness and correct gauges to go with the engine of my choice.

I have never had an issue running multiple F225s regarding performance or torque on a number of different hulls. I have a friend with a F225 on a 211 and it runs awesome!!! He redid his transom and raised the splashwell level with his deck, gave him 1.5" higher for scupper placement and full of fuel (90gal), his scuppers are above waterline. I would be ecstatic with either a F225, 250 or 300 given they are in my price range. Another friend's dad replaced his ox66 with a brand new F300, original transom and the boat sits very well and runs fast, efficient and quiet.

I have gotten a quote on a completely new powerhead for my OX66 for $6k installed. OUCH!!!

I know the HPDI 200s are pretty solid but I worry about the performance.

I am just not sold on Etecs due to personal experiences on other boats. Maybe it was bad luck but a pair of 225s and a pair of 150s didn't perform to the owners or my expectations. I was thoroughly disappointed.

If I find a good used Zuke 225/250, that SOB will be hanging on the back of my boat ASAP. I love the Zukes.

I'm really starting to wrap my head around the fact that I will probably go ahead and rebuild the transom as I'm leaning hard towards a four stroke. I've owned the boat for 3yrs and plan on owning her at least another decade. Cutting and clearing out all the bad chit is one thing, building it back will prove to be a PITA for me I'm sure.
