Yes I believe you have to have a rental to have use of the canal. Where are you looking to stay?

We are booked at Emerald Towers. I think I found a place to keep the boat and trailer.

Should be OK for a week.

My 7 yo son told me at dinner last night " hey dad, DO you know its only 4 and a half months until Destin"? I could not be any more happier at that moment! He also said he is going to win the kids division this year as he will fish all the time....OK that was the happiest moment

HOLLY COW we are 3.5 months away and we have no countdown, no chatter and no spark of excitement. How do we fire up this party?

Do the officers of this organization need any help with planning? I am horrible at fundraising as I have struck out over 60 times the last two years. I can contribute some adult beverages and fish fillets dockside while doing awards... Very relaxing to me and I don't have to rush back from the Point.

Let's get this thing moving.

This is basically what I meant by the fire drill comment. Not much is happening.I know some of the guys that spearhead this are pretty well preoccupied this year.I'm all ears on how we can get the fire lit.

Just warming up for June:

We are into April now so whats the hot bite you ask? My answer would be Trigger Fish, Mingo Snapper, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel and Daytime Swordfish. The most notable catch of the week Captain Adam on One Shot Fishing Charters was 3 for 3 with daytime swordfish 4-2-18. A few cobia showing up along with a few nice sized fish but not real good numbers yet, maybe this week they show in force.

Trolling---Kings are steady with some very nice sized fish, several over 50lbs reported this week. Spanish mackerel are thick in the bay and in the gulf, troll a mackerel tree with spoon and 4oz trolling lead. Plenty of bonito.

Bottom Fishing---Mingo Snapper and Triggerfish are plentiful near shore on natural bottom and ledges, along the east beach a fair bite of red grouper, scamp on the ledges in 200-350ft bottom.

Bay Fishing---All the Spanish mackerel you want most days, a better bite on the redfish and trout now we are past the full moon. There are still some sheepshead biting but they are definitely showing down.

Offshore Fishing---Daytime Swordfish bite is quite good, a few wahoo near the edge and a few stray chicken dolphin.

Getting closer...

Destin Fishing Report 5-1-18

Well it looks as though the cobia new when the tournaments were over as the last couple days have been the best cobia days of the year. Amberjacks also opened today and early reports is they are biting well but it is quite rough offshore today.

Offshore Fishing----Good bite of wahoo and blackfin tuna and a few dolphin. There is a good push of pretty water just south of the Ozark over towards the steps. Wahoo are biting Yozuri Bonita, Fathom high speed lures and Islander lures rigged with ballyhoo, Blackfin tuna are hitting cedar plugs rigged behind Playaction Birds. Dolphin are best on ballyhoo rigged on Soft Head Lures.

Nearshore Trolling---Kings are hitting Yozuri Plugs and Rapalla lures rigged with 4-8oz trolling leads, Fish darker colors closer to the boat on larger trolling leads and lighter colors farther out on smaller trolling leads. THE LATEST AND GREATEST ARE THE NEW YOZURI VIBE LURES!!!! HOT HOT HOT!!

Deep Dropping----Snowy grouper are hitting in 500-700ft ledges and tile fish are on the mud flats 700-1000st. Daytime swordfish action is still very good near the spur and canyon.

Bottom Fishing---Of course with amberjack opening today they are good, Fish the larger steel wrecks for the best action. Chumming for black snapper is good near shore over natural bottom. Plenty of triggers and mingo snapper over natural bottom and ledges 85-150ft

Pier Fishing---They have started spotting some tarpon but none caught yet, some kings when the wind is blowing from the south. The best action is Spanish on Gotcha Lures and Pompano on Goofy Jigs or pompano jigs.

Surf Fishing---Pompano action was a little off the last few days with the full moon but we are getting past that and they should turn back on any day. The best baits have been fresh peeled shrimp, sand fleas and Fishbites. Plenty of sharks at dusk and after on cut mullet and Bonita strips.

Bay Fishing---Trout and reds are biting Z-man soft plastics, Mirr-o-lure topwater lures mostly top dogs and top dog jrs, spinner baits and gold spoons are also producing good redfish action, Trolling for Spanish on straw rigs is good around the bridges and Crab Island.

Destin Fishing Report 5-10-18

Can you feel the change in the weather? The last few mornings there has been humidity in the air and this will bring changes from spring pattern to summer pattern and lots more regular fishing opportunities. Offshore action is in full swing, deep dropping and all in between. One of the most notable catches of the week was Capt. Adam Peebles going 3 for 3 on daytime swordfish on Wednesday 5-9-18. Also starting this Friday the live bait boat will be back in action.

Offshore Fishing---There is pretty water running from just south of the Ozark back towards the nipple and down to the steps. Wahoo action is consistent on Yozuri Bonita lures and Islander Lures wigged with ballyhoo. Tuna are hitting cedar plugs running behind birds. Dolphin are hitting Soft Head Lures.

Deep Dropping---Pretty consistent catches of tile fish, snowy grouper and barrel grouper. The daytime swordfish action is downright good, as mentioned earlier one boat going 3 for 3 this week. For Swordfish fish the spur and the wall between the nipple and the steps.

Near Shore Trolling----The kings are doing very well, Fish are all through Southeast Rocks, Broken Bottom, 18s Timber Holes. You can troll live cigar minnows or a variety of lures. Some of the better lures are Yozuri Vibes, Yozuri Crystal minnows and Live Target Cigar minnow lures. A good supply of chicken dolphin and loads of Bonita.

Bottom Fishing----Amberjack are the main target, Shimano Flat Fall jigs are working well. For live bait fishing catch come live hardtails or herring and fish a 10ft 80lb leader over wrecks. Mingo Snapper and Trigger Fish are on natural bottom and reefs structure. Cut mackerel and quid for bait.

Surf Fishing---Calmer surf conditions and the sheer number of hardtails and ladyfish have slowed the bite of pompano some but action is still steady on shrimp, sand fleas and Fishbites. The afternoons seem better than the mornings as when the wind kicks up the water freshens and the fish become more active. Sharks are biting cut mullet and Bonita after dark in good numbers.

Pier Fishing---Like the surf the pier seems to be better in the afternoon when the wind is blowing, some very nice sized Spanish mackerel on cigar minnows and Gotcha lures. Kings are biting Rapalla X raps and Yozuri Vibe lures. They have started spotting tarpon but none caught yet, first one could be landed any day. Hogy lures will be the most popular baits.

Bay Fishing---Trout and reds are bot biting, early morning and late afternoon will be a fun topwater bite, during the day a live shrimp or small bait fish drifted over the flats will bring the best action.

Destin Fishing Report 5-22-18

Amberjack and triggerfish season is drawing to an end for a few months, good news is gag grouper and red snapper will be opening. On another front the tarpon have started to turn on near shore and at the pier.

Tarpon Fishing---Tarpon have finally started to bit both near shore for boaters and off the pier. They can be sight fished similar to cobia fishing. The boat fisherman have the best luck with live cigar minnows, herring and threadfin herring. On the pier the majority are caught with Hogy Swimbaits. That said Hogy swim baits will work from a boat and live baits will work at the pier. For a live bait rig make a 24in 60 Yozuri fluorocarbon leader with a 6/0 or 7/0 Owner Mutu Light circle hook.

Deep Drop FishingDaytime swordfish are the prime target but there are plenty of Tilefish, Barrel Grouper, Snowy Grouper and long tail seabass. We are now stocking Red Goat Fish in 5lb boxes for bait and they are $9.99. These are bait fish found in depths of 800 to 1800ft and make good deep water baits.

Bottom Fishing---Amberjack are taking Shimano Butterfly and Flat Fall jigs and being caught best in depts. Of 120-250ft over wrecks. Black snapper are very good over natural bottom, Try live chumming with menhaden that you cast net in the bay. Of course triggerfish and mingo snapper are taking cut squid and mackerel. Try cutting you bait the night before and salting you bait to make the tougher.

Offshore Trolling---Wahoo, Dolphin, Tuna an Marlin are all biting regular, Our Destin boats had a great weekend in the Orange Beach Tournament taking most of the big money in the blue marlin and wahoo categories, The Wynsong caught a 110lb wahoo on a Blue and White Islander rigged with a ballyhoo.

Near Shore Trolling----Kings are being caught at a good pace on Yozuri Vibe, Yozuri Crystal Minnows and Rapalla Xrap Lures. Lots of chicken dolphin on live cigar minnows or Gotcha Troll lures with the single hook not the regular one with treble hooks.

Pier Fishing---Kings most days on Rapalla Xrap lures or live Cigar minnows, Spanish on Gotcha lures, Tarpon on Hogy Swim baits and plenty of hardtails and ladyfish.

Surf Fishing---mostly Ladyfish, hardtails and some pompano. Plenty of sharks at night on but Bonita or cut ladyfish.

Bay Fishing---Trout and reds are on the flats early, Fish a Voodoo Shrimp under a popping cork. Later in the day move to seep water docks and fish a Mirrolure Mirrodine or Sinking Yozuri plug.

Half Hitch (Destin)
June 7 at 2:59pm
Destin Fishing Report 6-7-18

Here we are in the first week of June and the fishing is as hot as the temperatures. The Destin boats are cleaning in in the billfish tournaments along the gulf coast taking home top money the last few weeks. The tarpon bite is becoming steadier and Red Snapper opens for everyone on Monday June 11th.

Bottom Fishing
The grouper bite is steady in depths 200-400ft deep on hard bottom, rocks and ledges, even in these depths the snapper can be bothersome so make sure to use larger baits like threadfin herring, ruby lips. Mingo snapper and large Bonita strips. Mingo snapper rare plentiful fishing natural bottom 125-185ft on cut squid or mackerel, cut and salt your baits the night before for better action and to make the baits last longer. Some real nice scamp coming in off the deep ledges.

Nearshore Trolling
The king bite has been on and off near the beach, the best action has been in the 18s, Nicky Grounds and the south or southwest edge area. They have been taking live cigar minnows, Yozuri crystal minnows and Yozuri vibes. Random catches of chicken dolphin and Bonita.

Deep Drop Bottom Fishing
Sound like a dead horse but if you have not tried daytime sword fishing you are missing out on a untouched resource just like the snowy grouper, barrel grouper and tile fish.

Offshore Fishing
Blue marlin are definitely on the menu along with dolphin, wahoo and tuna. The Wynsong won this past weekends tournament with a 699.3lb blue marlin. Troll red/white or blue/white Islander lures rigged with ballyhoo for steady action.

Pier Fishing
Tarpon are showing up here, several have been hooked but only a few landed. Random King Mackerel action in the afternoons. Regular action on ladyfish, blue runners and blue fish. A few Spanish mostly larger sized ones being landed.

Bay Fishing
Both the trout and the reds are biting, early morning fish live baits under a popping cork or topwater baits over the flats, as the day heats up move to deep water docks and fish suspending baits of swimbaits for mid-day action.

Surf Fishing
We hear some June grass and showed up which will hamper fishing to some degree but has not been wide spread yet. The best daytime action is ladyfish, blue runners and blue fish. There are still some pompano biting but not like the early spring. Sharks are plentiful at dusk and early evenings, use cut ladyfish, Bonita or mullet as bait.
